The 3 signals that actually mean something (and the 4 that don't)

Spent a while breaking down why "just tell them how you feel" is terrible advice for anyone whose crush is already a friend. It skips the part where you find out if there's anything there before you risk the friendship.

Here's the short version of what actually predicts interest — and what people mistake for it.

Signals that mean something:

  1. Response time creep — they used to take hours, now they reply in minutes, unprompted. Effort direction changed without you asking for it.

  2. Personal disclosure escalation — they're telling you things they don't post publicly or tell the group chat. That's a trust upgrade, not just closeness.

  3. They initiate low-stakes plans — not "we should hang out sometime" (that's nothing), but an actual time and place, proposed by them.

Signals people misread as interest (they usually aren't):

  1. Being nice to you — that's baseline behavior for a decent friend, not a signal.

  2. Long conversations — length tracks compatibility as friends just as much as romantic interest.

  3. Physical touch that's consistent with how they treat everyone (side hugs, arm taps) — normalize to their baseline, not to what you want it to mean.

  4. "You're so easy to talk to" — this is the single most misread line in the English language. It's a compliment on your friendship skills, not a confession.

The move isn't to declare feelings off one good signal. It's to test with something low-risk — a slightly longer compliment, a one-on-one hangout instead of group, one more personal question than usual — and watch how they respond before you escalate further. If they match your energy, you have real data. If they don't, you've lost nothing and the friendship is intact.

Timing matters too: move on this within a few weeks of noticing real signals. Wait months and you both calcify into "just friends" — that frame gets harder to break the longer it sits unchallenged.

Happy to break down a specific situation in the comments if anyone wants a second opinion.
