Most surfers read forecasts wrong — here's what actually matters
Everyone checks wave height. Almost nobody checks wave period.
Here's why that's backwards:
A 4ft wave at 18 seconds of period has way more energy than a 6ft wave at 8 seconds. The 18-second swell has traveled thousands of miles from a major storm. The water particles are moving in deep, organized circles all the way to the seafloor. When it hits a shallow break, that energy has nowhere to go but up.
The 6ft wave at 8 seconds? Probably local wind chop. The energy is disorganized. It'll crumble and section.
Why period matters:
Long period (14s+) = deep water energy, powerful and lined up
Short period (under 10s) = wind swell, messy and weak
The same height swell at different periods creates completely different waves
Next time you look at a forecast, ignore the height first. Find the period. Find the direction. Then the size starts to make sense.
