The 3 things that actually matter pre-revenue

I've watched dozens of first-time founders burn months on stuff that doesn't move the needle. Here's what I'd tell my past self:

1. Talk to users before you write a single line of code.

Not your friends. Not your mom. Actual strangers who have the problem you think you're solving. 10 conversations will save you 6 months of building the wrong thing.

2. Your first version should embarrass you.

If it doesn't, you shipped too late. The goal isn't a polished product — it's a fast feedback loop. Ship ugly, learn fast, iterate.

3. Pick ONE metric and obsess over it.

Not signups, revenue, followers, AND engagement. One number. For most pre-revenue startups, that's weekly active users or conversion from landing page to signup.

Everything else is noise until you have signal.

We talk about this kind of stuff daily inside The Syndicate — a private network for early-stage founders who are actually building. If that's you, come join us.
