The First 72 Hours After Sudden Loss: A Practical Framework

When someone dies suddenly, the grief advice you'll find is about feelings. But the real crisis in the first 72 hours isn't emotional, it's operational.

You have to make phone calls you've never rehearsed. You have to answer questions you didn't know existed. You have to decide things while your brain is running on static.

Most people white-knuckle through this. They respond to whoever's loudest, agree to whatever seems urgent, and lose track of what actually matters.

There's a better way. It starts with three lists:

The Contact List, not everyone at once. Three categories: who needs to know now, who can wait 48 hours, and who you need to actively limit access to (because some people drain more than they give in a crisis).

The Decision List, what actually has a deadline this week vs. what just feels urgent because your nervous system is on fire. Most "urgent" decisions can wait 30 days. The ones that can't are usually logistical, not emotional.

The Hold List, everything you're being asked to decide that you simply don't have enough information for yet. Writing it down and putting it on hold is a decision. A good one.

This is the framework behind The Unanswered Goodbye, a practical ebook for adults surviving sudden loss. 7 chapters, 5 bonus printable tools, and a system for staying functional when nothing makes sense.

The goal isn't to grieve correctly. The goal is to not get derailed by overwhelm while you figure out what this loss actually is.
