3 things nobody tells you before your first long-distance motorcycle trip
I've spent the last few years planning and riding long-distance adventure routes, and the stuff that actually matters never shows up in the gear guides. A few things I wish someone told me early:
1. Your route plan will change on day one, and that's fine.
Weather, road closures, a bike shop conversation that turns into a detour — the plan is a starting point, not a contract. Build in slack days instead of a rigid itinerary.
2. Fuel range matters more than top speed.
Nobody brags about how fast their bike goes on a 400-mile stretch with one gas station. Know your bike's real-world range loaded with gear, not the spec sheet number.
3. The gear that fails is never the gear you researched.
Everyone obsesses over the jacket and helmet. The thing that actually ruins a trip is a $12 phone mount or a boot lace. Test everything on a weekend ride before you commit to a two-week trip.
I started a community called The Wander Lust for riders trading real route intel, gear reviews, and travel logs — not sponsored content. If you're planning a big ride this year, come share your route or ask questions.
