I've worked in hospitality for years. I've eaten at hundreds of restaurants across dozens of countries. Here are the 5 things I check within 30 seconds of walking in — and if I see them, I leave.
1. Laminated menus with photos of every dish
If the menu has 80 items with stock photos, that kitchen isn't cooking fresh. Tourist traps do this. Great restaurants let the food speak.
2. The host is more interested in filling seats than greeting you
The best restaurants treat you like a guest, not a transaction. If you're being rushed to a table without eye contact, the service won't improve from there.
3. No locals eating there
Look around. If it's all tourists with guidebooks, you're paying a premium for mediocrity. I always walk an extra 2 blocks past the main square.
4. Generic TripAdvisor stickers on the door
The places I love don't need to advertise their rating. They're full because word-of-mouth does the work.
5. The bread basket arrives immediately — and it's cold
Good restaurants care about every touchpoint. Cold, pre-sliced bread from a bag? That tells you everything about how the kitchen operates.
I share spots that pass all 5 checks — hidden gems, local favorites, and the tables worth flying for. That's what The Wandering Fork is about.
