What actually makes a candle 'clean burning' (and why most don't tell you the truth)
Started hand-pouring candles in my kitchen this year and the biggest thing I learned: almost every candle brand markets "clean burning" but very few explain what that actually means. So here's the real breakdown, no fluff:
1. Wax matters more than the label. Soy and coconut wax burn cooler and cleaner than paraffin. Paraffin is petroleum-based and releases more soot — that's the black residue you sometimes see on jar walls.
2. Wick material changes everything. Cotton or wood wicks burn cleaner than wicks with a metal core (some of which have been restricted for lead content). Wood wicks also crackle, which is a nice bonus.
3. Fragrance load is a tradeoff. More fragrance oil = stronger scent throw, but too much destabilizes the burn and causes soot/tunneling. Good candle makers test burn ratios for weeks before finalizing a batch — it's not just "add more scent."
4. "Non-toxic" isn't regulated. There's no legal standard for what brands can call non-toxic. The only way to actually know is asking for the wax type, wick material, and whether fragrance oils are phthalate-free.
