The 3 things that separate good folkstyle wrestlers from great ones

I've spent years studying what makes certain wrestlers consistently dominate on the mat while others with the same athleticism plateau.

It comes down to three things:

1. They think in positions, not moves.

Average wrestlers collect techniques like trading cards. Great wrestlers understand why a move works from a specific position and when to use it. They see the mat like a chess board — every position has a best response, and they've already decided what it is before they get there.

2. They control the conversation in their own head.

The mental game isn't some soft add-on. It's the operating system. The wrestler who's telling themselves "I'm about to get turned" is already losing. The great ones have trained their internal dialogue to be an asset, not a liability. Affirmations aren't cheesy — they're reps for your brain.

3. They have a clear identity.

They don't just want to "win more matches." They've defined exactly who they want to be as a wrestler and as a person. That clarity drives every practice, every drill, every decision. When you know who you are, you stop second-guessing yourself in scrambles.

I built Wrestling Success Principles around these three pillars — position mastery, mental game, and identity. If you're a folkstyle wrestler or coach looking for a system that goes deeper than just "here's a single leg tutorial," this is it.
