Why your thumbnail is costing you views
Most creators spend hours on their video and 5 minutes on the thumbnail. That's backwards.
Your thumbnail is the ad for your video. If it doesn't stop the scroll, nobody clicks — no matter how good the content is.
Here's what separates thumbnails that get clicks:
Contrast — bright subjects on dark backgrounds, or vice versa. Your thumbnail needs to pop at 120px wide on a phone screen.
Emotion — faces with genuine expressions outperform everything. Not fake surprise. Real reaction.
Simplicity — 3 elements max. If someone can't read your thumbnail in 0.5 seconds, it's too busy.
Text (if any) — max 3-4 words. Large, bold, high contrast. If you need a paragraph to explain your video, the concept isn't clear enough.
I've designed thousands of thumbnails for creators and the pattern is always the same — the ones who invest in their visuals grow faster. Period.
