I've spent way too many hours studying why some TikTok edits hold retention past 3 seconds and others don't. A few patterns kept showing up:

What works:

• Jump cuts every 1-2 seconds — even in "talking head" content. Dead air is the #1 killer of retention. If a sentence has a pause, cut it.

• Text on screen that restates the hook — people watch with sound off more than you think. Your first 3 words need to be readable, not just audible.

• Whip pans / speed ramps as scene transitions — not because they look cool, but because they reset the viewer's attention span for the next beat.

What doesn't:

• Slow fade transitions. They feel "cinematic" but they kill momentum on a platform built for speed.

• Editing to match a trending sound's beat drop instead of your own pacing. Cool once. Ignored the 2nd time.
