The waste-factor mistake that quietly eats flooring jobs' margins
Most crews use a flat 10% waste factor on every tile job. That number comes from straight-lay rectangular rooms — it's wrong for a huge share of real jobs, and it's costing installers money in both directions.
Where a flat 10% fails:
Diagonal layouts — waste factor should be 15-20%. Cutting every border tile at 45° eats a lot more material than people budget for.
Herringbone / chevron patterns — plan for 15-20% minimum. Every row-end cut is a partial tile you can't reuse elsewhere.
Large-format tile (24"x48"+) in small or irregular rooms — waste goes UP, not down, because you can't nest cuts efficiently on odd angles and jogs.
Simple rectangular rooms, tile laid straight — 8-10% is genuinely enough. Ordering 20% here just ties up cash in a pallet sitting in your garage.
Why this matters for your bid:
Under-order on a diagonal job and you're paying rush freight (or worse, waiting on a dye-lot match that doesn't exist) mid-install — that's a blown schedule and an angry GC.
Over-order on a straight job and that capital sits dead until the next job that happens to use the same SKU.
