The biggest mistake parents make with baby screen time (and how to fix it)

Most parents either avoid screens entirely or let YouTube autoplay run wild. Both miss the point.

The research on early childhood learning is clear: it's not the screen that matters — it's what you do around it.

Babies under 2 learn almost nothing from passive video watching alone. But when a parent watches alongside them, points at things, repeats words, and responds — the learning jumps dramatically. This is called "joint media engagement."

What this means practically:

  • A 3-minute video about colors is useless if you're scrolling next to your toddler

  • That same video, watched together with a parent saying "look! that's RED, like your cup!" — actually useful

  • The video isn't teaching the child. You are, using the video as a conversation starter.

This is why TinyMinds videos are short and single-concept. One color. One number. One animal sound. Simple enough that there's always a clear thread to pull on when you're watching with your kid.

If you're a parent of a 0–5 year old who wants screen time to actually mean something — that's exactly what we're building.
