What I wish I knew before starting Taekwondo

Most beginners quit within the first 3 months. Not because it's too hard — because nobody tells them what to actually expect.

Here's the reality of learning Taekwondo as an adult beginner:

Your balance will betray you at first. Standing on one leg to kick feels impossible for the first few weeks. That's normal. Your body is building muscle memory it's never had. Keep going.

Forms (poomsae) are not boring. Most beginners dismiss them as repetitive. They're actually how you build clean technique that makes your sparring dangerous later. Every black belt I've met drills forms obsessively.

The kicks are the last thing you learn properly. Everyone shows up wanting to do spinning heel kicks. The first thing you actually master is how to fall safely and how to stand correctly. Humbling — but essential.

Belt color doesn't matter as much as you think. Students who focus on the belt rush, cut corners. Students who focus on clean fundamentals advance faster and retain more.

If you're an adult who's thought about starting Taekwondo but kept putting it off — this is your sign. It's one of the best decisions you'll make.
