The Real Reason Your Toddler Won't Stay in Bed (It's Not What You Think)
Most toddler bedtime problems aren't about sleep. They're about the 45 minutes before sleep.
The stalling. The "one more story." The water. The potty. The monster check. The hug. The other hug. The different blanket.
After tracking hundreds of bedtime entries from parents in our community, here's what I've found:
The #1 bedtime mistake isn't being too strict or too lenient. It's being inconsistent.
When the routine changes shape every night — even slightly — toddlers don't know when bedtime actually starts. So they test. And test. And test.
Here's a 3-step framework that works:
Step 1: Pick 4-6 bedtime steps and lock them in.
Bath → PJs → teeth → 2 books → lights out → goodnight phrase. Whatever yours looks like, write it down. Say it out loud. Make it boring and repeatable.
Step 2: Plan your responses before you need them.
"One more book?" → "We read our two books. Tomorrow we pick two more."
"I'm not tired!" → "You don't have to sleep yet. But it's body-rest time."
Write these down. Tape them to the fridge if you have to.
Step 3: Track what actually happens for 5 nights.
Not what you planned. What actually happened. Where did the routine break? Where did you give in? No judgment — just data. Patterns show up fast.
The goal isn't a perfect bedtime. It's a predictable one. Toddlers don't need magic. They need a system they can count on.
If you want the full system with planners, scripts, trackers, and cheat sheets — that's what the Toddler Bedtime Routine Kit is for. But even without it, start with these three steps tonight.
