Why I Stopped Making Separate Toddler Meals (And What I Do Instead)

For the first year of my kid eating solids, I made two dinners every night. One for me. One tiny, bland, overcooked version for them.

It was exhausting. And honestly? Most of the kid food ended up on the floor anyway.

Here's what actually changed everything: I stopped making separate meals.

Instead, I started building every dinner around a simple formula:

  • One protein (chicken thighs, lentils, salmon — whatever I'd eat anyway)

  • One vegetable (roasted, steamed, or raw depending on age)

  • One grain or starch (rice, pasta, sweet potato)

  • One sauce or dip (hummus, yogurt, pesto — something that ties it together)

Then I just served smaller portions of the exact same thing to my toddler. Same plate, same table, same meal.

Three things that happened immediately:

  1. Grocery bills dropped. I wasn't buying separate "kid food" anymore — no pouches, no frozen nuggets, no special snacks. Just real ingredients.

  1. Evenings got calmer. One meal to prep, one cleanup. I got 30-45 minutes back every single night.

  1. My kid started eating better. When they see you eating the same food, something clicks. No pressure, no bargaining. Just shared meals.

The trick isn't fancy recipes. It's having a system — a repeatable weekly rotation you can shop for on autopilot.

If you're a single parent and dinner feels like a daily crisis, it doesn't have to. One family meal. Every night. That's the whole approach.
