Most acting classes teach you technique. Nobody teaches you what actually happens when you show up to a real film set for the first time.

Here's what caught me off guard — and what I now make sure every actor I coach knows before they walk on set:

1. Nobody is going to hold your hand. The AD calls your name, you hit your mark, and you deliver. If you freeze, the whole crew is waiting. Preparation isn't optional — it's survival.

2. The camera sees everything you're hiding. That nervous energy you think you're masking? It's on screen. Learning to channel nerves into your character is a skill that separates amateurs from professionals.

3. Continuity matters more than you think. If you picked up the coffee cup with your left hand in take 1, it better be your left hand in take 7. Small details like this determine whether you get called back.

4. Your job starts before "action." How you interact with the crew, how you handle direction, whether you show up knowing your lines — casting directors hear about all of it. Your reputation builds (or breaks) between takes.

5. Auditions aren't performances — they're conversations. The readers in the room aren't your audience. They're your scene partners. The actors who understand this book more roles.
