Midday read β Monday, September 28, 2026 Β· 11:45 AM ET
Friday's bounce didn't survive the weekend. S&P 7,677.14 (β0.86%), Nasdaq 26,789.88 (β278.84, β1.03%), Dow 51,455.78 (β372.84, β0.72%). VIX +9.68% to 16.31.
The index opened at its session high of 7,721.70 and hasn't traded there since. That's the fourth time in six sessions the open has been the high of the day β the pattern from last week is back, and it's the most consistent thing in this tape right now.
The chips are getting hit hardest. INTC β6.67% to $114.79, SNDK β5.17%, AMD β4.73% back under $601, MU β4.03% losing $1,038, SMH β1.89%. Every name that led the September melt-up is giving ground.
NVDA +2.05% to $229.69 is the exception β the only green chip on the board, and it's outperforming its own complex by seven points. Money isn't leaving the AI trade, it's consolidating into the single name with the cleanest numbers.
Meta keeps unwinding. META β4.40% to $718.58, down about 6% since Thursday's close. The post-Muse, post-Connect run is now two-thirds retraced.
The rest of mega-cap is soft: TSLA β3.33%, MSFT β1.37% giving back Friday's pop, AMZN β1.27%, GOOGL β1.11%. AAPL β0.04% is essentially flat, and XOM +1.59% has energy as the one clearly bid corner again.
The level to watch: the S&P is 41 points above its 50-day at 7,636. It has held that line every time it's been tested this month. A close below it would be the first real break in the pattern since August.
