5 Gear Mistakes Experienced Hikers Still Make

I've been hiking backcountry for years and I still see experienced hikers making these mistakes. Sharing because I've made every single one myself.

1. Overbuying on base layers. You don't need 5 merino tops. Two — one on, one drying — gets it done for anything under a week.

2. Ignoring insole upgrades. Your $300 boots shipped with $5 insoles. A proper aftermarket insole changes everything on long descents.

3. Trusting old maps. Trails reroute. Water sources dry up. Always cross-reference with recent trip reports, not just your topo from 2019.

4. Packing "just in case" layers. If you've checked the forecast and it's clear, that extra puffy is dead weight. Pack for the conditions, not for anxiety.

5. Skipping hip belt pockets. If your pack doesn't have them, add aftermarket ones. Having snacks, phone, and nav accessible without stopping is a game changer.
