5 Things I Wish Every New Puppy Owner Knew (From a Professional Trainer)

After years of training dogs across the Philly tri-state area, I see the same mistakes over and over. Here's what would save every new puppy owner months of frustration:

1. Socialization has a deadline. Your puppy's critical window closes around 16 weeks. After that, everything gets 10x harder. Expose them to new sounds, surfaces, people, and dogs NOW.

2. Potty training is about management, not punishment. If your puppy has an accident inside, that's on you — too much freedom too soon. Crate training + scheduled outdoor trips = housebroken in 2 weeks.

3. Stop repeating commands. If you say "sit" five times before your dog sits, you've taught them that "sit" means "ignore the first four." Say it once, then guide them into position.

4. Loose leash walking is the hardest skill to teach. Start inside your house, then your yard, then the sidewalk. Don't jump to public walks until they nail it at home.

5. The best training happens between sessions. A 1-hour session once a week means nothing if you're not reinforcing it the other 167 hours. Consistency beats intensity every time.

I run HomePaws Academy out of Upper Darby, PA — 1-on-1 training, board & train, and day school. But honestly, 80% of puppy problems can be fixed by following the five things above.
