Been doing cover songs for a while now and the biggest lesson I've learned: nailing the notes is not the same as nailing the song.

A lot of singers (myself included, early on) chase pitch accuracy like it's the whole job. It's not. The covers that actually hit are the ones where you make a choice — a phrasing change, a key that fits YOUR voice better, a dynamic shift the original didn't have. People don't want a karaoke-perfect copy, they want to feel like you found something new in a song they already love.

Three things that changed my covers the most:

1. Stop matching the original's key by default. Transpose to where your voice actually resonates, even if it means the song sounds different from the original.

2. Pick ONE moment to make bigger than the original. A held note, a stripped-down bridge, something that becomes "your" version's signature moment.

3. Record your speaking voice reading the lyrics first. It sounds weird, but it tells you where the natural emotional emphasis actually falls in the words — most people sing right over it.
