5 Mistakes That Kill Your First Aquarium (And How to Avoid Them)
Starting your first freshwater tank is exciting — but most beginners make the same costly mistakes in the first 30 days. Here's what to watch out for:
1. Skipping the Nitrogen Cycle
Your tank needs beneficial bacteria to convert ammonia → nitrite → nitrate. This takes 4-6 weeks. Adding fish on day one is a death sentence. Use a liquid ammonia source and test daily until you see 0 ammonia, 0 nitrite.
2. Overstocking Too Fast
A 10-gallon tank is not a 10-fish tank. Start with 2-3 hardy fish (like corydoras or endlers) and add slowly — one small group every 2 weeks.
3. Ignoring Water Parameters
Get an API Master Test Kit (not strips). Test weekly for pH, ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate. Your fish can't tell you the water is toxic — the test kit can.
4. Overfeeding
Feed only what your fish can eat in 2 minutes, once or twice a day. Uneaten food rots and spikes ammonia. Less is more.
5. No Water Changes
25-30% water change every week. No exceptions. Use a gravel vacuum to siphon debris from the substrate. This is the single most important maintenance habit.

Get these 5 things right and you're already ahead of 90% of beginners. The rest is just patience and consistency.
