How to Pick the Right TV Mount (And Why Most People Get It Wrong)

Most people buy a TV, grab whatever mount is cheapest on Amazon, and end up with a crooked screen, damaged drywall, or a mount that can't handle the weight.

Here's what you actually need to know:

Standard vs. Motion vs. Ceiling — what's the difference?

  • Standard (fixed) mount: Sits flat against the wall. Cleanest look, most affordable. Best for living rooms where the TV faces the couch straight on.

  • Motion (full-motion) mount: Swivels, tilts, and extends. Perfect for corner setups, kitchens, or bedrooms where you watch from different angles.

  • Ceiling mount: Ideal for garages, gyms, commercial spaces, or rooms with no wall space. Sturdy and out of the way.

The #1 mistake? Not finding studs. If your mount isn't anchored into wall studs, it's a matter of time before your TV hits the floor. Toggle bolts alone won't cut it for anything over 40 lbs.

The #2 mistake? Wrong VESA pattern. The bolt spacing on the back of your TV has to match the mount. Measure before you buy.
