After years of 1:1 tutoring across CAPS, IEB, and UK GCSE syllabuses, these three habits consistently separate learners who improve from those who plateau:

1. Spaced retrieval beats re-reading.

Re-reading notes feels productive but barely improves recall. Instead, close the book and try to write out everything you remember about a topic, then check what you missed. Repeat that topic again 3 days later, then a week later. This is why we give every learner a baseline assessment — it tells us exactly which topics need spaced repetition first.

2. Past papers are diagnostic tools, not just practice.

Don't just mark past papers right/wrong — log why each mark was lost (silly error, didn't know the method, ran out of time, misread the question). After 3-4 papers, a clear pattern usually emerges, and that pattern tells you exactly what to fix.

3. Teach it back.

If a learner can explain a concept (Pythagoras, balancing chemical equations, an English poem's theme) out loud in their own words without notes, they've actually learned it. If they can't, it's not embedded yet, no matter how many times they've reviewed it.
