The clarity trap: why 'finding yourself' is the wrong goal

Most burned-out professionals don't need to "find themselves." They already know what's wrong — the job that drains them, the boundaries they don't set, the pace they can't sustain. What they're missing isn't clarity. It's a decision.

I've coached enough people through this to notice the pattern: they come in wanting a breakthrough insight, some hidden truth about their purpose. But the real work is almost always smaller and less glamorous than that:

  1. Name the actual constraint. Not "I need a new career" — usually it's "I say yes to things I resent" or "I've built my identity around being needed."

  2. Pick one boundary and hold it for 2 weeks. Not five changes. One. Most people quit the process because they try to overhaul everything at once.

  3. Track energy, not just time. Burnout isn't a time management problem. It's an energy leak problem — and most people can't see where theirs is going until they write it down for a week.

If you're waiting for a moment of clarity before you make a change, you'll wait a long time. The clarity usually comes after the first small decision, not before it.

Started a coaching community for exactly this — practical, no-fluff work on clarity and boundaries. Link's in my profile if it's useful.
