If your evenings are messy, a perfect bedtime plan will fail. Track the mess instead.
Most sleep advice assumes you get a clean landing every night.
You don't. You stay up because work ran late. A kid woke up. You got home at 10:40. You had coffee at 4pm because the afternoon collapsed. Then a 10-step wind-down routine shows up and asks you to become a different person before midnight.
That is why those systems get dropped. They need a life you do not have on the nights you need help most.
What actually helps is smaller:
Write down when the evening really started, not when it was supposed to.
Note when you actually slept, without grading it.
Check caffeine and leftover energy in one line.
Once a week, look at the pattern. Pick one small change, or pick none.
You can do that in under five minutes, even when you are tired. You do not need an ideal bedtime to start.
If your nights are irregular, stop trying to install a perfect routine. Notice what your evenings already do. That is the whole job in week 1.
