Why Every Writer Needs a Worst Draft

There's a myth that good writing flows out of you like water.

It doesn't. Good writing comes from bad writing — the kind you're embarrassed to show anyone. The ugly first draft where your characters sound like robots and your metaphors make no sense.

I used to delete everything that wasn't "good enough." Then I realized I was deleting the raw material that great stories are built from.

Here's what changed for me:

1. I stopped editing while writing. The creative brain and the editing brain can't work at the same time. Let the mess happen first.

2. I started sharing early. Not polished work — rough, honest drafts. The feedback I got on messy work was 10x more useful than feedback on "finished" pieces.

3. I wrote the worst version on purpose. Write the cliché. Write the obvious ending. Then ask yourself: "What's underneath this?"

That's how you get to the real story.

I built Unwritten Club because I needed a place like this — where writers share the mess, not just the masterpiece. If that sounds like your kind of thing, the door's open.
