Why most futures traders blow up — and the one thing that fixes it
I've been trading equity index futures for years. ES, NQ, YM — intraday and swing. I've seen a lot of traders come and go.
The #1 reason they blow up isn't bad entries. It's not even bad risk management (though that's close). It's trading without a plan for the session.
Most traders open their charts at 9:30, see a candle moving, and chase it. No levels marked. No bias. No idea where they'll take profit or cut losses. They're just reacting.
Here's what changed everything for me:
Before every session, I mark 3 things:
The overnight high/low and where we are relative to it
The key support/resistance from the prior session's value area
Review where price is relative to the Daily, Weekly and Monthly Pivots
That's it. Takes 10 minutes. But it turns you from a reactive trader into someone who's waiting for the market to come to you.
If you're trading futures and you're not doing pre-session prep, you're gambling. Simple as that.
I run a Discord community where I share my live setups, pre-session levels, and market analysis every day. If you want to trade with structure, come check it out.
