5 things most small business websites get wrong (and how to fix them in a weekend)
I've built websites for dozens of small businesses over the years. Same mistakes keep showing up. Here's what I see constantly:
1. No clear call-to-action above the fold.
Your homepage has 3 seconds to tell someone what you do and what to do next. If your CTA is buried, you're losing leads. Fix: one headline, one button, above the fold.
2. Mobile is an afterthought.
Over 60% of your traffic is mobile. If your site looks weird on a phone, that's most of your audience having a bad experience. Test everything on your phone first, desktop second.
3. Too many pages, not enough substance.
A 5-page site with real content beats a 20-page site full of filler. Cut the fluff. Keep: Home, Services, About, Contact. That's it for most businesses.
4. Stock photos everywhere.
Nothing kills trust faster than generic handshake photos. Use your own photos, even if they're iPhone shots. Authenticity wins.
5. No social proof.
Testimonials, logos, case studies — anything that shows real people trust you. Put them on your homepage, not hidden on a testimonials page nobody visits.
Most of these are free to fix this weekend. The ROI is immediate.
