Why most 50k-follower creators leave money on the table

I've spent the last few years negotiating brand deals for creators, and the same mistake shows up over and over: creators with genuinely engaged audiences quote rates based on follower count alone, and brands take advantage of that.

A few things I tell every creator before their first sponsor call:

1. Engagement rate beats follower count in every negotiation. A 40k-follower creator with 8% engagement should out-earn a 150k-follower creator with 1% engagement. Brands know this. Most creators don't lead with it.

2. Never quote a single number. Always give a package (post + story + usage rights) with tiered pricing. It reframes the conversation from "can we afford you" to "which tier fits our budget."

3. Usage rights are where the real money is. Brands will often pay 2-3x your base rate for 6-12 months of paid ad usage rights on your content. If you're not asking about usage separately, you're giving it away.

4. The first offer is never the real offer. In 3 years of deal-making I can count on one hand the times a brand's first number was their max.

Built Vantage Managed Talent around fixing exactly this gap — real negotiation support and a sponsor pipeline for creators who don't have an agent yet. If you're sitting at 10k-500k followers and doing your own deals right now, happy to answer questions here.
