Why ChatGPT recommends your competitor's WooCommerce store
I keep seeing the same pattern on WooCommerce stores that already do $10k+/month on Google.
They rank. They convert. ChatGPT still sends the shopper to someone else.
Here's why.
1. Your catalog has no identity.
Missing GTINs, inconsistent brand names, no product type. A human can guess. An LLM will not. It skips you.
2. You have no machine-readable answers.
Title + price is not enough. AI shopping agents look for attributes, FAQs, and schema (JSON-LD). If it isn't marked up, it doesn't exist.
3. You block the crawlers that matter now.
GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot. If robots.txt or a security plugin fences them out, you are invisible on purpose.
4. There is no commerce protocol surface.
Google and OpenAI are moving toward Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP) manifests. Stores without one look like a brochure, not a shop.
Quick check you can do today:
Ask ChatGPT: "Where should I buy [your best product]?"
Open one product page. View source. Search for
application/ld+json.Open robots.txt. See if GPTBot is disallowed.
If ChatGPT doesn't name you, and you have no product schema, that's the gap. Fix the data layer before you spend another dollar on ads.
