The 3 habits that cap your reading speed at 250 WPM (and how to break them)

If you've ever felt "stuck" around 200-250 words per minute no matter how much you read, it's almost never a lack of intelligence or practice — it's one (or more) of these three habits.

1. Subvocalization

This is the little voice in your head "saying" every word as you read it. It feels natural, but it caps your reading speed to roughly your talking speed. Fix: try counting "1-2-3-1-2-3" silently on repeat while reading a paragraph. It occupies the part of your brain responsible for subvocalizing, forcing your eyes and visual processing to take over. It'll feel uncomfortable at first — that's normal.

2. Narrow fixations

Untrained readers fixate on almost every single word, one at a time. Trained readers group 2-3 words per fixation. Fix: practice deliberately "softening" your focus so you take in small clusters of words at once instead of one word at a time. Start with easy, familiar material.

3. Regression

This is unconsciously re-reading words or lines you already read — often just out of habit or momentary doubt, not because you actually missed something. Studies suggest this alone can cost readers 30%+ of their potential speed. Fix: use a pen, finger, or cursor to physically guide your eyes forward at a steady pace slightly faster than feels comfortable. It trains your eyes not to backtrack.

None of these are fixed overnight, but even a week of deliberate practice on just these three habits produces a noticeable jump in speed and focus.

If you want a structured, beginner-friendly path that builds all of this into a 7-day practice plan (plus comprehension and retention training, not just speed), I built exactly that at VeloRead Academy. Happy to answer questions here either way.
