3 things deepfakes get wrong that your eyes miss
Most people think they can spot a deepfake. They can't.
The latest generation of AI-generated videos has gotten scary good — lip sync is near perfect, skin texture is realistic, and even lighting is consistent. But there are tells that algorithms can catch that the human eye simply can't.
1. Temporal inconsistencies — Frame-by-frame, deepfakes often have micro-jitters in facial landmarks that are invisible at normal playback speed. The jaw might shift 0.3px between frames in a way real faces never do.
2. Audio-visual desync at the phoneme level — Sure, the lips move when words come out. But map specific phonemes to lip shapes and deepfakes consistently fumble on bilabials (sounds like "b", "p", "m"). The timing is off by 40-80ms.
3. Compression artifacts in the wrong places — Real video compresses uniformly. Deepfakes show higher compression noise around the face because the generated region has different frequency characteristics than the surrounding footage.
