5 editing mistakes that make your videos look amateur (and how to fix them)
Been editing videos for years, and these are the mistakes I see beginners make over and over:
1. Jump cuts with no purpose
Every cut should serve the story. If you're cutting just to cut, your video feels choppy and stressful to watch. Use J-cuts and L-cuts instead — let the audio from the next clip start before the visual. Instantly smoother.
2. Music that fights the dialogue
Your background music shouldn't compete with your voice. Drop it to -18dB to -24dB under speech. Use a compressor or just keyframe the volume manually. Takes 2 minutes, makes a massive difference.
3. No color correction at all
Even basic white balance and exposure adjustments make your footage look 10x more professional. You don't need to be a colorist — just learn the basics of the Lumetri panel or DaVinci Resolve's color page.
4. Default transitions everywhere
That star wipe or cross dissolve? Delete it. Clean hard cuts or simple fades are what pros use 90% of the time. Fancy transitions scream "I just learned this button exists."
5. Ignoring pacing
Watch your video at 1x speed as if you're a viewer, not the creator. If you're bored, they're bored. Cut tighter. Most YouTube videos should be 20-30% shorter than the creator thinks.
