After sourcing and testing dozens of drones over the past year, here's what actually matters when buying your first one — and what the review sites don't tell you:

1. Camera stabilization beats megapixels every time.

A 4K sensor on a wobbly drone looks worse than a 1080p sensor on a stable one. Look for 3-axis gimbal stabilization before you care about resolution.

2. Flight time is always overstated by ~25%.

A drone rated for 30 minutes flies about 22 in real conditions. Wind, temperature, aggressive flying — it adds up. If you need 20 min of real air time, buy for 30+.

3. The cheap spare parts trap is real.

Some budget brands have zero aftermarket support. If a propeller snaps or a motor burns out, you're buying a whole new drone. Stick with brands that sell parts separately.

4. Obstacle avoidance is worth the premium for beginners.

You will crash. The question is whether it's a $15 propeller swap or a $300 repair. For first-time flyers, sensors save the drone and your nerves.

5. Batteries are the hidden cost.

One battery gives you 20-25 min of flight. Pros fly with 3-5. Factor in battery cost when comparing two drones at different price points.
