The 3-hour rule that fixed my screen addiction
I used to wake up and immediately check my phone. Emails, socials, news — all before my feet hit the floor. By 10am I'd already feel drained, and I hadn't done a single thing that mattered.
Then I tried something stupid simple: no screens for the first 3 hours of my day.
Not forever. Not some monk-mode fantasy. Just the first 3 hours.
Here's what changed:
Week 1 — Brutal. I didn't know what to do with myself. Turns out I'd forgotten how to just... exist without a screen.
Week 2 — Started journaling, stretching, actually cooking breakfast. My brain felt quieter.
Week 3 — I was getting more deep work done before lunch than I used to finish in an entire day. My anxiety dropped noticeably.
Week 4 — The habit stuck. It stopped feeling like willpower and started feeling like protection.
The thing nobody tells you about a digital detox is that it's not really about screens — it's about reclaiming the space in your head that notifications stole from you.
I built VitalShift's Digital Detox program around this exact framework. If this resonates, check it out — we go way deeper than just "put your phone down." 🧠
