The #1 Pitch Correction Mistake Killing Your Vocals (and the 30-Second Fix)
Most producers reach for Auto-Tune or Melodyne the second a vocal lands in their session. That's the mistake.
The problem: You're correcting pitch on a raw, unprocessed vocal. The pitch detection algorithm is fighting with room noise, proximity effect, plosives, and sibilance — all of which create false readings and artifacts.
The Fix: Pre-Correction Cleanup
Before any pitch tool touches your vocal, do this in Ableton:
High-pass filter at 80-100Hz — removes rumble that confuses pitch detection
De-ess lightly — sibilance creates momentary pitch spikes that algorithms chase
Gain-ride or compress gently (2-3dB) — consistent amplitude = more accurate detection
Remove breaths and clicks — silence them or separate to another track
This takes 30 seconds and dramatically improves the accuracy of any pitch correction tool.
The Result
Melodyne detects notes more accurately
Auto-Tune tracks pitch without warbling
You use less correction overall, which means more natural-sounding vocals
The irony of pitch correction: the less your tools have to work, the better they sound.
This is one of the first things I cover in my Vocal Pitch Correction & Tuning Masterclass here on PitchCraft. If you want the complete workflow — from raw takes to radio-ready vocals in Ableton — the full course is available now.
