1. Too much heat, too long

Holding the iron on a pad for more than 3 seconds will lift traces. Get in, make the joint, get out.

2. Cold joints

If it looks dull and grainy, it's not making proper contact. Reheat, add a tiny bit of fresh solder, and let it flow.

3. Wrong tip size

Using a chisel tip on 0402 components is like using a sledgehammer on a nail. Match the tip to the job.

4. No flux

Flux isn't optional. It cleans oxidation and helps solder flow. Use it every time.

5. Cheap solder

Bargain solder has inconsistent flux cores and impurities. Spend the extra $5 — your joints will thank you.
