5 Things I Wish Someone Told Me Before Taking the VSA Exam

If you're preparing for the Vehicle Sales Authority (VSA) Salesperson Licensing Exam in British Columbia, here are five things that would have saved me a lot of stress:

1. The Motor Dealer Act Is Half the Exam

Most people focus on sales techniques, but the MDA and BPCPA regulations make up a massive portion of the test. Know the penalties, prohibited practices, and cooling-off periods cold.

2. "Common Sense" Answers Are Usually Wrong

The exam tests specific legal knowledge, not general business intuition. If an answer sounds reasonable but you can't point to the regulation behind it, it's probably a trap.

3. Cramming the Night Before Doesn't Work

This isn't a memorization test — it's an application test. You need to understand why rules exist, not just what they say. Give yourself at least 2 weeks of focused study.

4. Practice Exams Are Non-Negotiable

The format matters as much as the content. Getting comfortable with 70 multiple-choice questions under time pressure is a skill in itself.

5. Your Dealership Wants You to Pass

Talk to your manager. Most dealerships will give you study time and may even cover your prep costs. This license is an investment for both of you.
