The hidden cost of having more than one pet (and how we're fixing it)

Multi-pet households don't get talked about enough. Everyone budgets for "a dog" or "a cat" — almost nobody budgets for the second, third, or fourth.

A few things we learned building Wagly Supply Co.:

  1. Consumables scale linearly, but attention doesn't. Two dogs eat 2x the treats, but you don't have 2x the time to shop for them. The friction of restocking is the actual pain point, not just the cost.

  2. Bundling beats couponing. Multi-pet owners don't want a 10% off code for one item — they want someone to just handle the recurring list: waste bags, treats, wipes, a toy in rotation. That's the whole thesis behind our monthly box.

  3. Retention lives in relevance. The households that stick around are the ones where the box actually matches their pets — a senior dog and a kitten need very different things. We're building toward more personalization here, not less.

If you're running (or thinking about running) a subscription business for a niche with recurring, boring-but-necessary purchases — pet supplies, cleaning supplies, whatever — the lesson translates: sell the elimination of a chore, not just a discount.

Happy to swap notes if you're building something similar.
