Why I think laundry is the most underrated local gig right now
Been building out a laundry pickup/delivery service (WashRunners) and wanted to share some numbers that surprised me.
Most gig platforms are saturated — food delivery margins are razor thin, rideshare markets are flooded with drivers. Laundry is different:
Low competition per zip code. Most cities have zero on-demand laundry gigs. You're not fighting 40 other drivers for the same order.
Recurring, not one-off. A rideshare passenger is a one-time transaction. A laundry customer who signs up for weekly pickup is worth 4x/month, every month, with almost no churn if the quality is consistent.
Low equipment barrier for Runners. No car required in dense areas — a bike or even walking works if you're paired with a laundromat partner. Entry cost is near zero.
The unit economics are simple. Charge $60-90/month for 2 loads/week, pay a Runner $8-12/job (pickup + drop), keep the spread. Once you have 15-20 subscribers in a neighborhood, one Runner can cover the whole route in a single afternoon loop.
The hard part isn't demand — everyone hates doing laundry. The hard part is reliability. One late pickup or a ruined sweater and you lose the customer for good. So the whole model lives or dies on consistency, not marketing.
If you're thinking about starting a local gig business and don't want to compete in an oversaturated market, laundry is worth a serious look.
