The 3 comp-reading mistakes that cost resellers the most money
Been deep in watch comps for a while now and the same 3 mistakes keep showing up in resellers' flips:
Using stale comps. A comp from 3 weeks ago on a hyped ref (think GMT Master II or Nautilus 5711) is basically fiction in a fast market. If the comp isn't from the last 48-72 hours, treat it as a rough anchor, not a price.
Ignoring condition spread. Two "comps" for the same ref can differ 8-12% purely on box/papers, service history, and bracelet stretch. Always normalize comps to full-set before you compare — otherwise you'll misprice your own flip.
Chasing the highest comp instead of the median. One outlier sale (emotional buyer, auction fever, whatever) isn't the market. Pull the last 5-8 comps and use the median, not the peak, or you'll sit on inventory waiting for a price that already passed.
Real-time comp tracking fixes #1 automatically, but #2 and #3 are discipline — build a simple checklist before every flip. Happy to go deeper on sourcing comps in real time if there's interest.
