The #1 budgeting mistake new freelancers make (and how to fix it)

Most new freelancers track their revenue but completely ignore their expenses until tax season hits. Then it's panic mode.

Here's the thing — your income as a freelancer is unpredictable. Some months you land $5K clients, other months it's crickets. If you're spending based on your best month, you're setting yourself up to fail.

The fix is dead simple:

Take your last 3 months of income. Average it. Now multiply by 0.7.

That's your actual spending budget. The other 30%? Split it:

  • 15% taxes

  • 10% emergency fund

  • 5% reinvest in your business

No fancy apps needed. A spreadsheet works. A notebook works. What matters is that you do it consistently.

I built a Budget Planner System specifically for solopreneurs and side hustlers who want a plug-and-play system for this. Templates, trackers, the whole thing — so you don't have to build it from scratch.

But even if you don't grab it, start with the 70% rule today. Your future self will thank you.

The 50/30/20 rule is outdated. Here's what actually works in 2026.

Everyone tells you to follow the 50/30/20 budget rule. 50% needs, 30% wants, 20% savings.

But here's the problem — if you're in your 20s making $35-50K, that math doesn't work. Rent alone eats 40-50% in most cities. And "wants" vs "needs" is a blurry line when your phone plan and wifi are basically survival tools.

What I do instead:

I use a zero-based approach. Every dollar gets a job before the month starts. No arbitrary percentages. Just real numbers based on YOUR life.

Here's the framework:

  • Fixed costs first — rent, utilities, subscriptions, debt minimums. These don't move.

  • Savings target — even if it's $50/month. Automate it. Treat it like a bill.

  • Flex spending — everything else. Food, going out, clothes. This is the number you actually control.

The key isn't the percentages. It's having a system you'll actually stick to.

I built WealthKit because I was tired of generic advice. Every template inside is designed for people in their 20s who are starting from scratch — not people with a $150K salary and a 401k match.

If that's you, come check it out.

The 3 spreadsheets that changed how I manage money

Most people's "budgeting system" is checking their bank app and hoping the number looks okay. I was the same way until I built three simple spreadsheets that completely changed my financial life.

1. The 50/30/20 Tracker

Not the concept — an actual working sheet. Every paycheck gets auto-split into needs, wants, and savings. When you SEE where every dollar goes, you stop wondering why you're broke on the 25th.

2. The Net Worth Dashboard

Your bank balance is not your financial health. I built a single-page view that tracks assets minus liabilities, updated monthly. Watching that number climb — even by $200/month — is the most motivating thing I've ever experienced.

3. The Investment Log

Not a stock picker. Just a simple tracker: what you bought, when, how much, and current value. Removes the emotion from investing and replaces it with data.

These three tools took me from "I should probably save more" to actually having a system. No apps, no subscriptions, no complexity. Just spreadsheets that work.

I packaged all of them (plus a few more) into the WealthKit Bundle. If you want the same system, it's yours.
