A $180k salary can still feel like $60k. Here's why.
Most people with a high W2 don't have an income problem. They have a keep problem.
The raise hits. Taxes take a chunk. Rent or the mortgage takes another. Then the silent stuff: delivery because you're tired, the car payment that "fits," the dinner that exists so nobody thinks you're cheap. Six months later the bank balance looks the same and you feel behind again.
I started writing this down because I kept meeting people who make real money and still feel one bad month away from stress. They don't need a beginner budget. They need a system that pulls money out of the flow before lifestyle claims it.
The simple version:
1. Map last month into 3 buckets. Must-pay. Lifestyle leak. Future. No fourth bucket. Most high earners are shocked by bucket 2.
2. Kill one leak, on purpose. Not a personality makeover. One subscription stack, one delivery habit, or a 48-hour wait on anything over $200 that isn't must-pay.
3. Automate a wealth layer the morning after payday. 10% of take-home into a separate account that is not checking. If it's in checking, you will spend it. If you have high-interest debt, that transfer goes there first. Same habit.
You can still have a nice life. You just stop letting the entire raise vanish into a slightly more expensive version of the same month.
If you do nothing else this week: write the three bucket numbers from last month. That number is the whole diagnosis.
