The 4 places brides get burned in wedding vendor contracts (and how to catch them fast)

Booked a wedding vendor in the last few months and felt rushed? Here's the thing nobody tells last-minute brides: the contract is where you lose money, not the negotiation.

I've been digging into wedding vendor contracts and there are 4 spots where brides consistently get burned:

1. Deposits that aren't actually refundable "deposits"

A lot of contracts label something a "deposit" but the terms make it a non-refundable retainer the moment you sign. Read the exact clause, not the label.

2. Add-ons quietly becoming mandatory

"Optional" add-ons (extra hour, second shooter, travel fee) sometimes get bundled into the base package language later in the doc. If it's not itemized with its own price, assume it's negotiable — or gone.

3. Cancellation/reschedule language that only protects the vendor

Look for asymmetry: can THEY cancel on you with no penalty, but you lose 100% if plans change? That imbalance is common and very negotiable if you catch it before signing.

4. Hidden fees buried in "additional terms"

Overtime rates, travel beyond X miles, gear rental, credit card processing fees — they're almost always in a separate clause near the bottom, not near the price.

The fix that's worked for me: review contracts in the same order every time — deposits, add-ons, cancellation, fees — instead of reading top to bottom. It takes 5 minutes and you stop missing things when you're stressed and booking fast.

If you want the exact checklist I use, I put it together as a quick-reference kit — check out "Wedding Vendor Contract Kit" on my profile.
