5 Things Nobody Tells You About Planning a Destination Wedding in Europe

I've helped couples plan weddings across Ireland, Spain, and Portugal. Here's what catches everyone off guard:

1. Paperwork timelines vary wildly by country.

In Spain, you need to submit civil documentation 3-6 months in advance depending on the region. Ireland is more straightforward, but still requires 3 months' notice. Portugal sits somewhere in between. Start early.

2. "Peak season" is different for each country.

Everyone assumes summer = expensive everywhere. In the Algarve, October is still 25°C with half the crowds. In Ireland, late May and early September are the sweet spots — better light, better prices, fewer tourists.

3. Local vendors are almost always better value.

Flying in your photographer from London sounds glamorous until you see the travel surcharge. Local photographers in these countries are world-class and often half the price. Same goes for florists, caterers, and DJs.

4. Guest logistics will make or break the experience.

Your guests need to get there, stay somewhere, and get around. The couples who plan the best weddings always sort accommodation blocks and transport early — especially in rural Ireland and the Spanish countryside.

5. The legal ceremony and the celebration don't have to be on the same day.

This is the biggest unlock. Many couples do the legal bit quietly at the town hall, then throw the big celebration at the dream venue. Less stress, more flexibility, better photos.
