Why most boutique owners overpay on their first wholesale apparel order

When we started sourcing for small boutique and online store owners, the #1 mistake we saw over and over: buyers accept whatever MOQ (minimum order quantity) a factory quotes first, without pushing back.

Here's what actually moves the needle when you're placing your first bulk apparel order:

1. MOQ is almost always negotiable below 100 units. Most factories quote 300-500 units as a default, but if you're testing a new style, ask for a "sampling MOQ" of 50-100. You'll pay slightly more per unit, but you avoid sitting on dead stock.

2. Ask for cost breakdowns, not just a final price. Fabric, trims, labor, and shipping should be itemized. If a supplier won't break it down, that's a red flag — it usually means there's margin being hidden that you could negotiate away.

3. Always request a physical sample before committing to a production run. Photos lie about fabric weight and stitching quality. A $15-30 sample fee saves you from a $2,000+ mistake.

4. Payment terms matter more than price. A supplier offering 30/70 split (30% deposit, 70% on shipment) with a mid-range price beats a cheaper supplier demanding 100% upfront.

We built Prosper Source to help small store owners skip the trial-and-error part of this — direct access to vetted sourcing contacts, sample requests, and low-MOQ custom runs. Happy to answer sourcing questions in the comments if you're working on your first order.
