Most small YouTubers obsess over the wrong numbers. Here's what I've learned tracking hundreds of channels:
Metrics that PREDICT growth:
1. Click-through rate (CTR) — If your CTR is above 6%, YouTube will push your content. Below 3%? Your thumbnails and titles need work before anything else matters.
2. Average view duration vs. video length ratio — A 10-min video with 5 min AVD (50%) will outperform a 20-min video with 6 min AVD (30%) every time. YouTube cares about the percentage, not the raw number.
3. Returning viewers % — This is the sleeper metric. If 30%+ of your views come from returning viewers, you're building a real audience, not just chasing algorithms.
Metrics that DON'T matter (as much as you think):
❌ Subscriber count — Subs are vanity. A channel with 5K subs and 60% CTR will grow faster than one with 50K subs and 2% CTR.
❌ Total view count — One viral video doesn't make a channel. Consistency of performance across your last 10 videos tells the real story.
Stop refreshing your sub count. Start studying your CTR and retention curves.
