Freelancers don't have a budget problem. They have a mixing problem.
Most freelancers can tell you their rate. They cannot tell you what they're allowed to spend on Thursday.
That's not a discipline issue. Invoices, tax, software, groceries, and "I'll pay myself later" all hit the same account. Then a budget app screams that you overspent — when you actually just paid quarterly taxes.
The fix is a split, not more tracking:
Business pocket — client payments in, tools and contractors out
Tax pocket — a fixed % of every invoice, untouchable
Owner pay — a transfer to yourself on a schedule, like a paycheck
Personal pocket — the only number you actually budget
One move this week: the next time a client pays you, skim tax and owner pay before you buy anything. The leftover is the real number.
