The real reason most options traders blow up their accounts (it's not what you think)

Been trading options full-time for a while now, and I keep seeing the same pattern wreck new traders — and it's not "bad picks."

It's position sizing on 0-45 DTE contracts. People find a ticker they're confident on, size up like they're trading shares, and forget that a 20% move against you on a short-dated option isn't a 20% loss — it's often 60-80%+ because of gamma and theta compounding against you at the same time.

The traders who last do three boring things:

  1. Cap single-position risk at 2-5% of account — even on "sure things." Especially on sure things, honestly, because that's when people oversize.

  2. Track theta decay daily, not just price — an option can be "right" on direction and still lose money if you're bleeding time value faster than the stock is moving.

  3. Write down the exit BEFORE entering — both the stop and the target. If you're deciding your exit in the moment, emotion has already won.

None of this is exciting. It won't get engagement on trading twitter. But it's the difference between compounding an account over years vs. blowing it up in a month chasing a green candle.

Happy to answer questions on options mechanics, sizing, or how we structure our alerts if anyone's curious — running a small desk (Wolves of Queens) where we post every entry/exit live, wins and losses both.
