Why Most Startup UGC Looks Like Garbage (And How to Fix It)

I've reviewed hundreds of UGC campaigns from early-stage startups. Most of them share the same 3 problems:

1. The brief is too vague. "Make something authentic" is not a brief. You need a specific hook, a pain point to address, and a clear CTA. If your creator doesn't know the exact emotion they're triggering in the first 2 seconds, the content will flop.

2. They optimize for "viral" instead of conversion. Viral UGC gets views. Converting UGC gets customers. There's a difference. The best-performing startup UGC follows a simple structure: problem → agitate → solution → proof → CTA. Every single time.

3. They ship one video and call it a day. UGC is a volume game. You need 5-10 variations of the same concept with different hooks, different creators, different angles. Then you test. The winning creative usually isn't the one you'd expect.

The startups that nail UGC aren't doing anything fancy — they just have systems. A clear brief template, a feedback loop, and enough volume to find what works.

We run this exact system for early-stage startups at XylaMedia. If your content isn't converting, the problem is almost always in one of these three places.
